Remote | Performance Engineering & Systems Consultant — $60–$100/hour

  • New York, New York, United States
  • Contractor
  • Remote

Job Description:

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for performance engineering professionals experienced in low-level systems optimization, C++, Python, Rust, runtime performance, compiler-adjacent workflows, and structured technical evaluation.

This role supports current and upcoming remote consulting opportunities focused on performance engineering review, systems-level optimization, AI workload analysis, technical task development, solution evaluation, and high-quality project execution. Selected professionals will apply hands-on systems and performance expertise to design challenging technical tasks, evaluate solutions, assess optimization reasoning, and provide structured feedback across advanced engineering workflows.

Key Responsibilities

Professionals in this role may contribute to:

Systems-Level Performance Review

  • Design and evaluate domain-relevant tasks involving performance engineering, systems programming, and low-level optimization
  • Review solutions related to runtime performance, compiler-adjacent reasoning, memory behavior, latency, throughput, and system efficiency
  • Identify gaps in technical reasoning, unclear assumptions, incomplete solutions, or weak performance tradeoff analysis
  • Support review of technical materials involving AI workloads, infrastructure performance, and systems design quality

Optimization & Technical Problem Solving

  • Write, assess, and reason about technical tasks involving C++, Python, Rust, and related systems programming environments
  • Evaluate optimization approaches for correctness, measurable impact, maintainability, and practical feasibility
  • Review technical decisions involving latency reduction, throughput gains, memory footprint optimization, and production system performance
  • Apply strong engineering judgment to assess whether solutions are technically sound and clearly explained

Rubric Development & Technical Feedback

  • Develop detailed rubrics and evaluation frameworks for performance engineering, systems design, and optimization tasks
  • Provide clear written technical feedback explaining solution quality, reasoning gaps, and improvement areas
  • Collaborate with other subject matter experts to support consistency and accuracy across technical review work
  • Maintain a high standard of precision, documentation quality, and structured evaluation across submitted materials

Ideal Profile

Strong candidates may have:

  • 2+ years of dedicated professional experience in performance engineering, systems programming, low-level optimization, or a closely related technical field
  • Deep hands-on expertise in at least one of C++, Python, or Rust
  • Working familiarity across multiple systems programming or performance-oriented languages
  • Demonstrable track record of measurable performance improvements in production systems
  • Experience with latency reduction, throughput improvement, memory optimization, runtime tuning, or systems-level debugging
  • Strong written communication skills and ability to explain complex technical decisions clearly
  • Ability to work independently in a remote, project-based environment

Educational Background

  • A degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, physics, or a related technical field is helpful
  • Professional experience in performance engineering, systems programming, compiler engineering, runtime optimization, infrastructure engineering, or low-level software development is highly relevant
  • Equivalent hands-on experience improving production system performance may also be valuable

Nice to Have

  • Experience with compiler engineering, runtime systems, profiling tools, distributed systems, high-performance computing, or AI infrastructure workloads
  • Familiarity with performance profiling, benchmarking, memory analysis, concurrency, parallelism, or systems-level debugging
  • Experience writing technical rubrics, evaluation frameworks, benchmark tasks, or expert-level engineering assessments
  • Comfort reviewing complex technical solutions and explaining tradeoffs with clarity and precision
  • Availability for high-commitment project work, potentially 30+ hours per week during weekdays depending on project scope

Why This Opportunity

  • Apply performance engineering expertise to structured remote project work
  • Contribute to high-quality technical task design, solution evaluation, and systems optimization review
  • Work on flexible assignments aligned with your C++, Python, Rust, and performance engineering background
  • Use your engineering judgment to evaluate complex optimization reasoning and systems-level implementation quality
  • Remote structure with competitive hourly compensation

Contract Details

  • Independent contractor role
  • Fully remote with flexible scheduling
  • Eligible professionals should be based in the United States depending on project needs
  • High-commitment project availability may be required, potentially 30+ hours per week during weekdays depending on project scope
  • Competitive rates between $60–$100 per hour depending on expertise and project scope
  • Weekly payments via Stripe or Wise
  • Projects may be extended, shortened, or adjusted depending on scope and performance
  • Work will not involve access to confidential or proprietary information from any employer, client, or institution
